Loosely based on the heroic exploits of The American Volunteer Group organized by Gen. Claire Chennault to fight the Japanese in China prior the US entry in World War II, the film was nominated for three Academy Awards, including Best Special Effects. Most of the film’s superb aerial battles were accomplished with miniatures filmed against natural claoud and rock formations by Republic’s ace special effects team, Howard and Theodore Lydecker. Even the full-size P-40 airplanes were made of plywood, since real P-40s were unavailable fort the studo’s use.
